South Beach Diet Explained

One of the hottest diet plans out there today is the South Beach Diet. This diet was developed by a Miami cardiologist named Arthur Agatston and is designed to be a safe and effective way for people to lose weight. This diet is ideal for people who don't like the idea of restricting themselves and are ready to learn a healthier way to eat. Emphasis is placed on choosing healthy carbs and healthy fats rather than prohibiting these elements. The South Beach Diet is divided into three different phases, each with its own set of rules.

Phase One spans a two week duration and is the most strict phase of the diet. During this time, you will be provided a list of foods you can and cannot eat. Examples of prohibited foods and beverages during Phase One are fruit, alcohol, potatoes, bread, rice, and sugar. You can have a moderate amount of lowfat dairy during this time. You might be wondering what you are allowed to have. Foods that are encouraged during the first phase are things like lean meat, fish, eggs, vegetables and nuts.

After Phase One, it's time for Phase Two. Phase Two can last for an indefinite amount of time, until the desired weight loss results are achieved. During this phase, you will be permitted to gradually reintroduce some of the foods that were prohibited in the first phase back into your diet. You'll still need to monitor your consumption of good and bad fats and carbs. However, by this time you'll be better accustomed to the principles of this diet and how to incorporate them into your life. One of the best things about this diet is the lack of deprivation. Although Phase One is rather restrictive, Phase Two is much less so. Not only that, but you'll learn how to satisfy cravings with healthy choices that taste great.

Phase Three is the end of the diet and represents a new way of eating for the rest of your life. You will enter Phase Three after you've lost all the weight you want to lose. It is the most permissive stage of the South Beach Diet. If this diet sounds appealing to you, you will need a copy of the book The South Beach Diet: The Delicious, Doctor-Designed, Foolproof Plan for Fast and Healthy Weight Loss by Arthur Agatston, M.D. This book contains all the information you will need to effectively use the South Beach Diet.
