If you're trying to lose weight, it's important to
understand that cutting calories simply isn't enough to do the
job. Some people think they can lose weight by simply reducing
their food intake. You might lose a few pounds this way, but
you're unlikely to keep them off. The best way to drop those
unwanted pounds is to combine a reduced calorie diet with a
good fitness plan.
The first aspect to an effective weight loss fitness plan
is cardiovascular exercise. Cardio gets the heart pumping and
helps melt away fat. It also helps deliver blood, oxygen and
nutrients to different areas of the body. Examples of
cardiovascular exercise include walking, running, swimming,
biking, dancing, aerobics and stair climbing. If you find it
difficult to stick with your cardio, try choosing a form that
you actually enjoy doing. For best results, you'll want to get
in at least twenty minutes of cardio three times per week. If
you can do a bit more than that, even better. Just be sure to
allow yourself a day or two of rest time.
Weight training is the second part of a good weight loss
fitness plan. Even if you don't want to build bulky muscles,
you still need to strength train using light weights. The more
lean muscle you have, the more effectively you'll be able to
burn fat and calories. Strength training even helps your bone
density, which is especially important for women and senior
citizens who may be at risk for osteoporosis.
You'll also want to incorporate some flexibility training
like Pilates or yoga into your routine. Even a few simple
stretches can help enhance your results. Flexibility is
important because it helps decrease the possibility of workout
related injury. Also, the more flexible you are, the more lean
and lengthly you will appear.
So, in review: to effectively lose weight, you not only
need to cut calories, you need to exercise. Go for circuit
training or alternate the days when you do your cardio,
strength, and flexibility training. This helps break up the
monotony of your exercise routine and gives you some variety.
If you are consistent with your workouts, you will most likely
start seeing results in as little as a few weeks. Working out
not only helps you lose weight and look better, it helps you
feel better. Exercise is a great stress reliever and can be an
enjoyable activity that you look forward to. Make sure you
consult with your doctor before beginning an exercise program.
