If you are a gym member or are thinking of becoming one,
there are lots of exercises you can do there to lose weight
and improve the look of your body. Most gyms contain all the
machines and equipment you will need for your entire workout.
A good workout combines three different aspects: cardio,
strength and flexibility training. Let's first examine the
importance of cardio and how you can get a great cardio
workout at the gym.
You'll find that there is a cardio workout solution for
everyone. Try the Stair Master, or use the treadmill.
Spinning, another word for strenuous exercise biking, is
another great cardiovascular activity. If your gym has a pool,
go swimming. Swimming is great cardio and helps tone every
part of the body. Another way to get your cardio workout at
the gym is to attend an aerobics class. There are all kinds of
classes out there these days, including those that incorporate
other elements like dance and martial arts into the routine.
Now let's look at strength training. Most gyms have a wide
variety of Nautilus exercise machines, which use adjustable
weight resistance to tone and strengthen various parts of the
body. Leg presses are ideal for the legs, thighs, buttocks and
even abs. Pull-downs are great for the shoulders, back and
arms. When you first join a gym, a representative should take
you through each machine and show you the proper technique for
use. Also, the machines should have printed instructions on
them that show proper technique and specify what part of the
body the machine is designed for.
Flexibility training can be achieved by attending a yoga or
Pilates class at your gym. You'll probably find a variety of
different classes for all skill levels, as yoga and Pilates
are two of the most popular forms of exercise. Yoga poses like
the cat and the cobra work the abs and strengthen the back,
while Pilates targets the core of the body and works to not
only strengthen, but lengthen as well.
Your gym may offer training services. This can be a great
way to get the most efficient workout possible. An experienced
and knowledgeable fitness trainer will design a gym workout
that is best suited to your individual fitness goals. What
works for one person may not work for another, which is why a
customized workout plan designed by a pro can be so effective.
Whether you go it alone or hire a trainer, you should aim for
three sessions of cardio per week in addition to three
sessions of strength and flexibility training.
