Motivating and Helping Your Partner to Lose Weight
If your significant other is struggling with a weight
problem, they need your loving support. It is important to
understand that support is different from nagging. For
example, you can't make your loved one want to lose weight.
You can't make them go on a diet or start exercising. However,
if your partner has expressed the desire to lose those extra
pounds, there are lots of ways you can encourage them.
The first thing to do is to understand what your partner's
biggest challenge is. Do they have trouble watching their
diet? Do they dislike exercise? By understanding the obstacles
to weight loss that your partner struggles with, you can help
make things easier. For example, if your partner has trouble
with their diet, remove high-calorie foods from your home and
replace them with low-calorie choices that you think your
partner will like. Experiment with different recipes to create
dishes for your loved one that are healthy yet delicious. Even
small changes, like grilling foods instead of frying them, can
make a big difference.
If exercise is your partner's biggest obstacle, make it
fun. Encourage them to exercise by doing things they enjoy.
Examples might include taking the dog for a long walk, going
out dancing, hiking, or swimming. The best way to encourage
your loved one to exercise is by exercising with them. If
you're not already a member of your local gym, sign up. The
great thing about the gym is that it has wide variety of
classes and exercise machines for every preference. Not only
that, but people are more likely to use something they're
paying for every month.
Another way you can motivate your partner to lose weight is
with positive reinforcement. Praise your partner for sticking
with their diet and exercise program. Give plenty of
compliments for good progress. Be sure to keep things
positive, even if your partner slips up or hits a weight loss
plateau. Also, setting a good example is crucial. By staying
at a healthy weight, eating wisely and exercising regularly,
you can make a difference. Not only will you look and feel
better yourself, you will motivate your partner to do the
same. If you and your partner enjoy friendly competition, make
a game out of your weight loss efforts. Implement a reward
system for results which could include anything from a foot
massage to a movie date.
The most important thing to understand is that your partner
needs your love. By expressing your concern for their
well-being, you can encourage them to attend to their weight
issue. Explain to your partner that you're concerned about the
health implications of being overweight, which can include
everything from heart disease to diabetes. Let them know that
you want them to stay healthy and live a long, happy life.
Express to them that the physical benefits of weight loss are
certainly a plus but that your main concern is for their
health. It's possible that your partner will realize that they
do want to look better and feel better -- and take the steps
towards achieving a healthy weight.
