Weight Loss by Surgery and Treatments
Weight Loss Surgery
Undergoing surgical procedures to lose weight should be a
last resort, largely due to the complications involved.
Normally, surgery is only suggested to those whose health is
at serious risk due to their weight, or who have exhausted all
traditional methods.
The more popular procedures include liposuction, stomach
stapling and Bariatric surgery. Liposuction involves the
removal of fat from specific areas of the body, and is more
suited to those that aren’t severely overweigh and merely wish
to reduce fat from a single area. Stomach stapling involves
reducing the size of the stomach, and whilst it does not
remove weight in itself, it limits the intake of food hence
weight loss can occur rapidly following the procedure.
Bariatric surgery takes several forms, but largely involves
limiting the intake of food as with stomach stapling, or
reducing the length of the intestine to reduce the amount of
fat absorbed into the body.
Each procedure carries it’s own risks and should be thought
through very carefully before proceeding. As with all surgical
procedures, there are risks of infection and side effects to
consider, which your consultant will inform you of. These
forms of surgery are also expensive, as you are unlikely to
get help towards the costs unless you are at risk of dying due
to obesity.
These methods of weight loss are guaranteed to provide fast
results, though will have an effect on you and your health. It
is therefore crucial that you consider the alternatives before
resorting to any of the methods listed above, and ask yourself
if surgery really is necessary.
