Pilates Weight Loss

The Pilates Method is a unique system, comprising of many specific exercises revolving around five pieces of apparatus. The idea behind the system is to develop the body uniformly, and to build strength and flexibility without building bulk. The Pilates Method does not just require repetitive practice of a handful of exercises, but precisely controlled movements which must be carried out under supervision of a trained instructor. The belief is that you develop a whole new way of thinking about controlling the body with this method.

As far as losing weight is concerned, you are unlikely to achieve much using the Pilates system. Although you will be increasing your fitness, become much more flexible and learn to control your muscles to a higher degree, the exercises are not highly intensive so you are unlikely to burn many calories.

However, Pilates is ideal for those recovering from injury as it allows gentle exercise of the body which will increase the speed of recovery for soft tissue damage. It is also ideal for pregnant women, who can carry out many of the exercises safely to improve body positioning and breathing, which may help them during pregnancy.

Pilates requires a lot of concentration and it is about engaging the body with the mind, so may not be ideal for everybody. The lack of intensive physical exercise means that weight loss results will be minimal. However, there are many benefits, both physical and psychological to the system, and if you have been interested in exercises such as Yoga, this may be for you.
